Teachers are angry

Look at this picture. Who are the people?

They are teachers. In the UK, teachers are angry. The government can’t pay all the teachers when they are old. So the teachers walk in London.

Because they are walking, schools are closed. Students have a day off school!

Are they happy or sad?

“I am happy,” says Adam, eight. “I like having a day off school. I play with my friends.”

“I am sad,” says Jill, nine. “I want to go to school!”

1. Do you like school? Why / why not?

2. You have a day off school. Are you happy or sad? Why? What do you do?

3. Is it good that the teachers are walking with signs? Why / why not?

“No poppies” for football

What is this red flower?

It is a poppy.
Every November, British people wear red poppies. It is to remember soldiers. Many soldiers die in wars.
Steve’s granddad was in the Second World War. Steve wears a poppy to remember.
Harriet’s friend is in Afghanistan. She wears a poppy for her friend.

The England football team wants to wear poppies for a game. They want to wear a poppy on their shirts. But Fifa makes the rules for football – and Fifa says, “No poppies!” Why? Because no team can put extra things onto their football shirts.

Many people are angry. The Prime Minister is angry. Prince William is angry. George is 86. He was in the Second World War. He says, “It’s so sad”.

Kimberley, 8, says “I think poppies are good because it remembers the people who die in war.” But Phoenix, 9, says “Poppies are bad because it isn’t fair on other teams. I agree with Fifa.”

Now Fifa says the England team can have poppies – on their armbands.

Do you have a special day for soldiers in your country?

Is it a good idea that the England team wear poppies? Why / why not?

Crazy weather

England is hot!

What season is October? Spring, summer, autumn or winter?

In England, October is in autumn. It is rainy and cold.

But this year, it’s hot and sunny – it’s 29 degrees in London.

English people love hot weather. “It’s summer! I’m going to the park to eat an ice- cream!” says Jake, 12.

“It’s too hot to work!” says Matt.

Plants and animals in England do not understand the hot weather. The plants have flowers and the animals don’t go to sleep. They think it is spring, not autumn!

What is the weather like in your country today?

What is your favourite season? Why?
